How can I migrate "safely" from one version of server to another?

Is it safe to migrate with unloaddb/loaddb? Is loaddb always backward compatible?

I have tried the following approach once:

- unload the databases from a CUBRID 8.3.1 installation;

- removed CUBRID 8.3.1 and installed CUBRID 8.4.0;

- loaded CUBRID databases using the loaddb command following the same instructions listed here:

http://www.cubrid.org/manual/840/en/Loading%20Database

and encountered no errors. Basically, CUBRID 8.4.0 has the same data types as CUBRID 8.3.1 and below so it is mostly compatible, although there might be certain scenarios in which loaddb might not work. However, since unloaddb saves everything as a sql file with create table commands and insert commands, it is easy to correct any import errors and also to check if the export was successful.

CUBRID Migration Tool is a powerful tool to accomplish this task. Gradually we're making it more and more convenient. You can not only "safely" migrate data from one version of CURBID to another, but also from MySQL/Oracle/MSSQL to CUBRID. Give it a try!
